Sea Lion Steal Baits and Fish Catches

There are many sea lions in the harbor. Marine lions often steal fish from the lead.

The sea lions have become conditioned to free handouts. They think any fish held up by anglers. The problem is getting worse.

What do sea lion diet ?

Sea Lions feed on more than 50 species of fishes and cephalopods, feeding primarily on squids, octopuses, hake, northern anchovy, opaleye, and herring.

“There is no local ordinance against feeding sea lions. But we don’t encourage it,” says Augusto Cachon. “We have signage around the docks. We send photos to boat owners. We see it happening. Because we are a tourist destination. Sea lion feeding is becoming more commonplace.”

Sea lions have broken swim platforms due to their weight. The waste is messy the water quality. Dock workers try to chase the animals off by spraying them.

Team Ole Ole had handed their tuna to a dockhand. When Poncho jumped out of the water. They snatched it from his grasp. Aristeo Gonzales were upset. Since they thought the fish might win the tuna daily jackpot. The team was recognized as the winner of the new Poncho Hard Luck Award. The honor comes with a trophy. It prizes for the most unusual event of the competition.

What is the color of a sea lion?

California sea lion coat colors vary. Generally, adult males are chocolate brown, females and young males are tan, and pups are dark chocolate brown.

The Los Cabos tournaments now provide a fish barrel to the weighing boats. So game fish are protected during the transfer. Marlin are no longer floated to the scales. They keep the sea lions from biting the billfish.

A serious incident occurred a few days prior.  Bill Collector owner Mark Chiavetta. Some other friends had a good day dorado fishing. As they came around the Arch. Sangetta posed for photos with a fish. A sea lion came over the gunwale . It bit the dorado and Sangetta’s hand. The sea lion let go. But Sangetta had to spend the night in the local hospital. He required 27 stitches. He has 90 percent mobility in the injured hand.

Enjoy Los Cabos’ unique fishery. Its bountiful wildlife from a distance. Take photographs if you’d like. But don’t feed the sea lions. You encourage charter boat crews to do it. You won’t be doing the animals any favors. You might get hurt in the process.
